Demonstrating Value | North East Wellbeing

EMBED LEARNING AND EVALUATION INTO YOUR WAYS OF WORKING TO DRIVE MEANINGFUL CHANGE

The Demonstrating Value programme was funded by You’ve Got This (YGT) as part of their Sport England-funded place-partnership work to tackle physical inactivity using a place-based, systems approach across South Tees.

Through insight, YGT recognised the importance of evidence-based community impact and commissioned the programme to be delivered in partnership with the Impact Hub of North East Wellbeing from September 2023 to December 2024.

YGT had identified that demonstrating the value of their commissioned projects was a critically important precondition to embedding a place-based, whole-systems approach to addressing physical inactivity. However, they also identified that a fundamental challenge was that community organisations had varying degrees of capacity and capability to capture, analyse, and embed evaluation and learning throughout their commissioned contracts.

These organisations also had variable levels of understanding about place-based system change. Consequently, there was a significant risk that commissioned projects would be unable to capture, share, and learn from the value of YGT’s investment or leverage this value to further drive the ultimate goal of sustainable system change.

The Demonstrating Value programme focused on building the capacity and capability of commissioned projects to demonstrate value and embed evaluation and learning into their ways of working. In doing so, it facilitated the identification and sharing of emergent value.

During the course of the programme, the Impact Hub of North East Wellbeing worked with 16 different commissioned programmes from a range of VCSE organisations. All of these organisations had varying capacity and capability to demonstrate the value of their programmes.

YGT’s investment in the programme enabled these organisations to be upskilled and supported by the Impact Hub of North East Wellbeing in embedding qualitative and quantitative methods of evaluation and learning systems into their programmes, enabling them to demonstrate their value and impact.

The programme enabled these diverse community organisations to be united by a shared common language and knowledge of evaluation and learning, an understanding of place-based whole-systems approaches, and of the value of their work and how demonstrating this value supports wider, long-term system change.

Community organisations value the support the programme has provided to help them to embed new ways of working into their programme delivery and their organisation. Please watch the video below to discover the impact the Demonstrating Value programme has had on these organisations.

“Working with North East Wellbeing on our Demonstrating Value commission has been exciting and incredibly impactful. At You’ve Got This, we understand many organisations that we work with are doing amazing things when it comes to supporting physical activity across South Tees but are struggling at times to identify for themselves the value that their work is generating, when using a Whole System Approach.

“The Demonstrating Value Programme that Jenna and Sophie have delivered for us and our networks has been engaging, flexible, and has been shaped throughout by learning and insight.”
